The church is believed to have been built in the late third century. The building's size, orientation to the east, proximity to a cemetery, and layout, which corresponds to that of early mud churches in Egypt, all attest to the truth of such estimates. Diggers also recently found what appeared to be a black cross painted on to the white plaster walls of the nave.
